Sports Academy

The Marring Sporting Academy develops confident Aboriginal athletes and community leaders with sustainable pathways in sport by connecting young Aboriginal people to their cultural identity and pride through the power of competition, teamwork, and belonging.

Our Approach

The Sporting Academy is Marring's flagship program for developing the next generation of Aboriginal sporting leaders, players, commentators, coaches, and administrators.

Designed and led by Aboriginal cultural and sporting leaders, the Academy guides emerging athletes through a structured journey of identity restoration, cultural grounding, sporting skill development, and mentorship. Everything participants experience begins on Country and carries the cultural authority of those who have cared for this land for tens of thousands of years.

What We Do

We develop emerging Aboriginal athletes

Our immersive programs are grounded in cultural identity, teamwork, Country, and personal responsibility.

We deliver structured formation

Participants move through fives stages – Connection, Story, Country, Roles and Responsibility, and Leadership – with the support of senior mentors, cultural leaders, and experienced sporting professionals, building capability on and off the field.

We create sustainable pathways in sport.

Graduates transition into playing, coaching, commentary, management, and community engagement roles, continuing to grow under ongoing mentorship and professional development.

We build a growing network of skilled Aboriginal sporting leaders

Our leaders are capable of representing their communities and their culture with pride, authority, and purpose across local, regional, and national stages.

Who We Work With

The Academy is designed for young Aboriginal people who love sport but have not yet had a structured pathway into it. Participants come from communities where connection to culture, language, and identity has been disrupted, and where sport has often been the one constant that kept them connected to peers and place.

Philanthropic partners, sporting bodies, and aligned organisations are invited to support the Academy, investing in a program that is Indigenous-led, evidence-informed, and designed to produce lasting community impact. Every contribution directly funds participant development, cultural formation, mentorship, and the on-Country experiences that make this work real.

The opportunity

Sport is already one of the most powerful entry points into pride, identity, and belonging for young Aboriginal people. Yet too few programs have combined genuine cultural formation with genuine sporting development. Most sporting pathways are built for performance alone, stripped of the cultural grounding that gives Aboriginal young people a reason to show up, stay, and lead.

The Marring Sporting Academy responds directly to that gap. It is community-owned, strengths-based, and built on a framework that has already demonstrated measurable outcomes across 271 participants nationally, including: 87% increase in confidence and self-belief, 84% stronger cultural identity and connection, 89% improved wellbeing outcomes, and 85% positive shift across all key indicators.

This is talent development and identity development. And identity, once restored, strengthens athletes, families, communities, and generations.

If you are looking to invest in something that creates lasting change for Aboriginal communities, that is Indigenous-led, evidence-based, and built to grow through the universal language of sport, this is where that conversation begins.
