OVERVIEW

Marring partnered with a network of regional schools to deliver a series of immersive cultural education programs, designed to strengthen students’ connection to Country, culture and community. Drawing on deep Dharawal knowledge and traditions, the program combined storytelling, language, movement and hands-on learning to create a meaningful and lasting impact.

The Challenge

The schools were seeking a way to move beyond surface-level cultural awareness and create genuine engagement with First Nations culture. They wanted students to not only learn, but to understand, respect and feel connected to the land and its history.

At the same time, educators required structured programs aligned with curriculum outcomes, while remaining culturally authentic and community-led.

The Approach

Marring designed and delivered a tailored program that blended education with lived cultural experience.

Key components included:

  • On-Country learning experiences led by Traditional Custodians
  • Language workshops introducing Gammēya-Dharrawal to students
  • Song, dance and storytelling sessions sharing cultural knowledge and traditions
  • Hands-on activities such as weaving and didgeridoo
  • Ongoing mentoring sessions to support emotional wellbeing and connection
  • Programs were delivered in a structured format, ensuring alignment with the NSW syllabus while maintaining authenticity and cultural integrity.

The Impact

Beyond the classroom, the initiative contributed to a broader goal of reconciliation and cultural revitalisation. Through genuine connection and shared learning, Marring helped bridge the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, ensuring that cultural knowledge continues to be passed on to future generations.

Testimonial

“Working with Marring has completely transformed how our students engage with culture. The experiences were not only educational but deeply moving — creating a level of understanding and respect that simply can’t be taught in a classroom alone.”
